According to the report of News Campaign of 5th Urban International Film Festival, “Selma” narrates 3 months of Dr. Martin Luther King’s controversial real-life story in 1965.
Dr. Luther King led his campaign to secure equal voting rights with peaceful protest in the face of violent opposition, despite objections from Lyndon Johnson, thirty sixth president of United States of America and George Wallace, governor of America he gained a special popularity among the people.
He turned his epic march from Selma to Montgomery which was caused to President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement.
Then Luther King took a long step for equal rights for whites and blacks as the leader of the civil rights movement of United States of America, however he was assassinated in 1968 and couldn’t see his tremendous impact in America’s society.
“Selma” is a 2014 historical and biographical drama film directed by Ava DuVernay, written by Paul Webb and produced by Oprah Winfrey, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Christian Colson. The film stars actors David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King, Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King, Jim France, Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding Jr., Martin Sheen, Tom Wilkinson and etc.
In addition to nomination for best film at 2015 Academy Awards, Selma won best movie music at 2015 Academy Awards. “Selma” also nominated for best director, best actor and best film at 2015 Golden Globes and won the prize for best movie music. The film won prizes for best actor, best music and best director at American-African film critics association, best female director and nomination for best actress at Association of Women Journalists and also best film, best producer and best actress at American Film Institute.
“Selma” is in international competitive section of 5th Urban International Film Festival. The Festival is held at Tehran during 24 May – 2 Jun 2015 and Siyavash Haghighi is the Festival Director.
